By Air, Land & Sea to Las Terrazas Resort

Are you interested in traveling to Ambergris Caye, Belize, but uncertain how to make it to the island? Travel confidently knowing Las Terrazas Resort makes all of your transfer arrangements, from air to land to sea. Here’s how your adventure will begin:

First things first. The attendants on your international flight should supply you with the arrival paperwork needed to pass through Immigration and Customs. Be sure to have a pen with you on the plane to allow for maximum efficiency.

Upon landing at Philip S. W. Golden Airport (BZE), you will deplane onto the runway and proceed to Immigration. The wait goes quickly – one of the many perks of traveling to a small country!  At just 8,867 square miles, Belize is about the same size as the U.S. state of Massachusetts or Wales in the U.K. Travel in and out of the country much more efficient than larger destinations.

After collecting your luggage, you will proceed to the nearby Customs line. Don’t worry – this is another breezy process. Once you pass through Customs, you will arrive at the local ticketing counters. Simply check in for your flight with the airline we booked for you (either Tropic Air or Maya Island Air) by showing your passport. Then proceed through security (yes, you’ll be asked to remove your shoes one more time) and enter the departure lounge. From there you can start your vacation with Rum Punch or Belikin Beer at the famous Jet’s Bar. There are also small shops that sell Belizean-themed souvenirs as well as snacks. Grab a Coke in a glass bottle and a bag of plantain chips and listen for the airline to call your flight over the loudspeaker.

This is definitely a flight you won’t want to sleep through. Here’s a tip to make it extra fun: ask the pilot if you can sit up front. They may let you sit in the co-pilot seat if you ask! The flight to the island of Ambergris Caye is just 20 minutes long. The view of the Caribbean Sea’s aquamarine waters and the Belize Barrier Reef below will take your breath away. The left side of the plane shows off the lagoon, the Maya Mountains, and views of the mainland. The right side will wow you with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea so be sure to have your camera ready. Don’t worry about looking like a tourist – everyone else on the plane will be snapping away as well!

Upon landing at San Pedro Airstrip, you will deplane and be met by our van driver, Walter. He will have a Las Terrazas sign in hand as well as on his van for easy identification. What makes him stand out even more than our logo is the fact that he will greet you like family. Walter will quickly collect your luggage and get you cozied in for the short van ride to the local marina.

Lastly, the resort’s private boat and Captain will meet you for the 10-minute boat ride to Las Terrazas. This last leg of the trip will give you a taste of the Caribbean that will have you begging to spend your entire trip on the waters. And there are plenty of excursions! Upon your arrival to Las Terrazas, you will be personally welcomed by our warm and professional staff. We will collect your luggage and offer you a Rum Punch and cold eucalyptus towel before check in under the open air Palapa Lobby.

21 Things to Know Before Visiting Ambergris Caye

We know that traveling to a new country raises questions about what to expect and how to create the best experience during your beach vacation. For those planning your first trip to Ambergris Caye, Belize, let us help you come prepared. Below are 21 things, in no particular order, that you should know before experiencing the island and our Belize luxury resort for the first time.

  1. We take COVID precautions seriously here in Belize, but we guarantee that you will still have a fantastic adventure. A negative rapid test is required upon landing in Belize City, masks are to be worn in public, and you must stay at a Gold Standard hotel such as Las Terrazas Resort. You may find more information on our website and in the Belize Health App. Other than that, you may still explore the Belize Barrier Reef, venture into the rainforest to the Mayan Ruins, head offshore to fish, and lounge by our 70’ infinity pool or white sand beach.
  1. Free Wi-Fi. Las Terrazas Resort makes it easy for you to stay connected to home from our island resort – free Wi-Fi is available to all guests, both in the residences and throughout the hotel, helping your international vacation feel as close to home as possible.
  1. The early bird gets the worm! The sun rises bright and early – around 5:30am year-round. Ease into your day with a traditional Belizean breakfast and fresh-pressed juices while relaxing by the infinity pool or opt for a beachside brunch at the one of the best Ambergris Caye restaurants the island has to offer. Or rise with the sun and get a head start on adventure; the island has many fantastic excursions to offer. Not an early riser? That’s okay! Our resort in Belize offers luxury rooms complete with heavy drapes to keep your room cozy and dark, giving you permission to laze the day away if you so wish.
Sunrise over the Caribbean Sea
  1. If you are traveling from the US, no adaptors are needed. The standard voltage in Belize is 110/220V and the typical 3 prong outlets used in America are used on the island and at Las Terrazas Resort hotel as well.
  1. Don’t overpack – our Belize Spa Resort provides luxury bath amenities, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion. Also available for your use are hair dryers, umbrellas for those surprise pop up showers, and yoga mats. Your kitchen will come fully stocked with plates, silverware, paper towels, coffee, cream and sugar. Pharmacies and grocery stores can be found in San Pedro town, and ask us about grocery stocking service prior to arrival.
  1. Water. Your safety is a priority at Las Terrazas Resort. While you should drink bottled water while out and about, Las Terrazas Resort has an on-site Reverse Osmosis plant where well water goes through a series of filters to purify it and is tested quarterly to ensure its safety. Our luxury island resort is the best place to drink your heart out – both in terms of water, and by way of our fantastic O Bar on site.
  1. No rental cars or GPS necessary. There’s almost zero risk of getting lost as the island is literally three streets wide, with Front Street running along the coast, Middle Street that runs from Las Terrazas Resort straight into town, and a third street on the lagoon side of the island. Las Terrazas Resort offers printed maps should you desire one, but otherwise this is a safe and easy island to blindly navigate on your own. From golf cart rentals (yes, you can really scoot your way around the island this way— see number 8) to land and water taxis, getting around is easy and affordable.
San Pedro Town, Belize
  1. Las Terrazas Resort wouldn’t be a true Belize beach resort if we didn’t have golf carts available for rent. This is a fun, unique alternative to public transportation and is an easy, breezy way to explore the island. Unlike many other countries, you can feel safe and at ease on our island roads— just watch out for pedestrians. There are no sidewalks in San Pedro so be mindful of those traveling on scooters, bikes, or by foot.
  1. When in Ambergris Caye, you will be on “island time.” Expect a laid-back approach to life, where everything moves at a nice, slow pace that allows you to soak up all the island has to offer. Ambergris Caye is a place where you can leave your worries behind and slow down for a change.
  1. Speaking of island time, Belize offers a casual, happy hour vibe. Bars tend to be tame at night as people are more likely to retire early in order to hit the waters the next morning. Belize is home to the Belikin Brewery and to order a “beer” here means to expect a Belikin in return. One helpful tip: If your beer comes decorated with a napkin, use it to wipe off the mouth of the beer. When the salty air hits the recycled glass, rust tends to form so a quick wipe down will do your body (and your drink) good.
Belikin Beer on the beach
  1. Be sure to tip in Belize. In some countries, tipping can be taboo or even offensive, but this is not the case in Belize. This generous gesture is comparable to the American practice; 15% and up is a good rule of thumb.
  1. Check your passports before booking your trip. All visitors must have a passport to enter the country, and passports must be valid for no less than six months after the intended period of stay. Most individuals don’t require a tourist visa to enter Belize.
  1. Contrary to what you may have heard, Belize is not a third world country; it is more accurate to describe it as “developing” or “emerging”. While more rural areas might fit the third world description a bit more accurately, this is not the case on the island of Ambergris Caye. With high-speed internet, cable TV with channels in multiple languages, electricity, indoor plumbing, A/C, international airport, sophisticated transportation system, advanced and easily accessible healthcare, and impressive high literacy, low infant mortality, and high life expectancy rates, Belize is modern and advanced. While some maintenance standards might be lower than travelers live with, it is certainly nothing inconvenient or unsanitary, and these differences are hardly noticeable once you get acclimated.
  1. Traveling with children? We love kids! US airports as well as Belize immigration require children under 18 years must travel with a valid passport. Immigration officials might also ask to see kids’ US birth certificates. Children traveling with one parent require a notarized letter of authority from the other parent indicating travel consent. Be sure to include your dates of travel, hotel name and location, name of the child, and who they are traveling with. Our Reservations Manager will provide additional information upon booking your reservation.
Kids are always welcome at Las Terrazas Resort
  1. Just like on many beaches across the world, sand flies – or “no-see-ums” – are present on Ambergris Caye. They are thought to be most active in the sand after a rainstorm, but a few simple tricks should help you avoid these pesky bugs. Wearing baby oil on your legs is a great deterrent as they can’t bite through it. DEET works and is also a great repellant for the mosquitos – especially between the hours of 5-7pm, as they are most active at dusk.
  1. Despite the assumption that many developing or central American countries are unsafe, you will find Belize to be relatively safe – and this is especially true of Ambergris Caye.  There are few violent crimes, though petty theft does occur on occasion. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t flaunt your things, and don your fanny pack or money belt if you dare. Las Terrazas Resort also has in-room safes to keep your valuables secure. What’s important to you is important to us, and your valuables are safe in our care.
  1. While our luxury island resort is a paradise on its own, we encourage our guests to get out, mingle with the locals, and experience authentic Belizean life on the island. Belize is known for the warmth, hospitality, and easy camaraderie found among its citizens. You truly won’t meet a stranger while on our turf.
  1. Unlike other tourist destinations, in Belize you will not be overwhelmed by vendors hoping to sell things to you. Entrepreneurs invite you to buy – it is their job after all – but the culture here is much more laid back. A simple “no thanks” will do the trick; vendors will let you peacefully move on to shop. On the other hand, if you enjoy bartering and want to find the best deals, this style of shopping is acceptable among the open-air vendors in town (think flea markets). Belize is known for its jewelry and wood carvings, and the best place to shop for them on the island is along Barrier Reef Drive. The vendors are friendly and can usually provide you with a neat back story on their business and how their items were made.
Local Shopping – Photo by AJ Baxter
  1. Speaking of island shopping, it is helpful to know that the currency exchange rate is set at $2BZD to $1USD. Currency exchange is available at the airport, but American currency is widely accepted on the island and credit cards are accepted at most Ambergris Caye resorts and restaurants. It is worth mentioning that AmEx is not widely used on the island and ATMs don’t always have cash available. Should you pay in cash, you may receive Belize currency in change (which works great for tipping), but heads up that there is not an exchange service when you depart from the airport.
  1. A tropical island like Ambergris Caye is more affordable than you may think. Enjoy local fare, like stewed chicken, rice, and beans for just $5USD. Local beer and alcohol typically run for less than $3USD per drink. The island has a plethora of affordable options available to you, but let’s not forget what draws us all to Ambergris Caye in the first place – its natural beauty! The Belize Barrier Reef, Mayan jungles, Caribbean Sea, and ancient ruins are some of the many astounding reasons people are drawn to the island.
  1. Belize is known for its beautiful beaches, but please know that they are not always 100% pristine. In fact, sea grass and sargassum seaweed are to be expected on the beaches. Sea grass grows completely underwater, is a valuable part of the ecosystem, and is what the sea life here dines on. This means awesome snorkeling, from the famous Mexico Rocks and even right off the shore at Las Terrazas Resort. Sargassum, on the other hand, floats on the water, and ocean currents take it to beaches all over the Caribbean. While this does not always make for the most attractive beach, Las Terrazas Resort rakes the beach daily to minimize damage to the beach while making it most attractive for your vacation photos. We guarantee that you will experience a beautiful and pristine beach while on our property!

And there you have it…. The top 21 things that first-time visitors to Ambergris Caye should expect! You’ve been warned: once you come to Ambergris Caye, you may never want to leave.

Curl and Las Terrazas Resort’s famous Rum Punch

Belizean Rum Punch

A classic creation from the Caribbean, Rum Punch is now served all over the world… though nobody makes it quite like Belize! Made from the lush sugar cane crops that grow so well in coastal regions, rum has become a widespread and iconic liquor in this part of the world. This distilled spirit mixes well in fruity cocktails and can even be enjoyed neat or on the rocks as it is known for having a high quality and smooth taste. Its sweet undertones of molasses that linger past each sip make this an alcohol that does not bite.

While this is one liquor every Caribbean visitor is encouraged to try, even more impressive is that Rum Punch has been declared the national cocktail of Belize! Found on nearly every menu and enjoyed by locals and travelers alike, there is truly no better way to greet island visitors. As such, this refreshing cocktail is the Welcome Home drink for all Las Terrazas Resort guests! Served on the dock upon arrival by our staff, including the fantastic Curl Bell (pictured above!), we can make our Rum Punch extra special with the addition of a paleta! Made from organic tropical fruits, these Spanish popsicles are delightful and full of flavor, giving our punch a special twist. Las Terrazas Resort is proud to partner with Regina Sansores from Las Paletas by Regina, as her handmade paletas are a local favorite on the island and provide a special addition to our already special cocktail. Her paletas boast of variety; her menu offers more than 15 flavors and includes both water and cream-based treats. When it comes to our Rum Punch, one thing is certain: this is one drink that leaves a lasting impression and has guests longing for more… and now you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home.

This ‘Happy Shot’ was first dreamed up for a destination wedding by our beloved bartender, Monica. Tasked with creating a special drink for the groom and gentlemen of the wedding party, it was initially served as the Green Chable but has since been dubbed the Monica Cocktail, for obvious reasons. An impressive combination of hues and flavors, this is one drink that is sure to wow your guests!

Ingredients:

1 oz. Hyper Vodka

1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps

1/2 oz. Pineapple Juice

1/2 oz. Blue Curacao

Shake all ingredients over ice and strain through a Hawkes strainer

Otherwise known as the Mimosa 2.0! We’ve upgraded this popular cocktail with pineapple juice in lieu of the classic orange juice recipe with which most are acquainted. Spice up your next brunch with this simple, yet brilliant, twist!

1 part Fresh Pineapple Juice

Garnish with sliced pineapple and Maraschino cherries and let the bubbly do its job!

This cocktail will perfectly satisfy the palette, all while giving you a craving for what Ambergris Caye does best: the beautiful Caribbean waters! 7 Ways to Stay Active on your Belize Vacation

While some people prefer to use their beach vacations as a break from working out, others like to remain active even while traveling. Regardless of the category you fall in, Ambergris Caye, Belize, is the destination for you! Offering both complete relaxation and an abundance of fitness options, the little island of Ambergris Caye can meet all of your fitness goals. And while our boutique island resort does not have an on-site gym, we do offer several amenities at Las Terrazas Resort, such as bicycles, kayaks, and Hobie Cats that all allow for both an awesome beach workout while also exploring the island and nearby Caribbean Sea. If you are looking for something a bit more specific or extreme, then look no further than the island of Ambergris Caye itself. Below are several other activities that are sure to meet your fitness preferences during your Belizean vacation.

CrossFit class
Drop in on a CrossFit class
  1. CrossFit. The W.O.D. Zone is a local CrossFit gym on Ambergris Caye that is owned and operated by Sushil and Lucien Pollard, who make other people’s fitness goals their own personal priority. So well-known is their gym that they actually have the highest drop in rate of any CrossFit facility in all of Central America and the Caribbean! Catering to the many travelers who vacation in Belize, this facility offers a $30 BZE drop in rate for one class, or a weekly pass for $100 BZE (6 classes, including Saturday). Be sure to check out CrossFit San Pedro Town for their address and class schedule. And a tip, just for free: You might want to drop in for an active Saturday class as rumor has it, they sometimes have mimosas!
  1. Fun in the Sun Aquafit. While Las Terrazas Resort’s 70’ Infinity pool is perfect for lounging, taking a casual swim, and delectable pool side dining, if you are looking for a more strenuous water workout, be sure to check out Fun In the Sun Aquafit. Trainer Eileen Jamison will not only whip you into shape on vacation but will keep you laughing while doing so. She is famous for helping you maintain what she calls a “beauteous gluteous” and for getting rid of that pesky muffin top. Classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10:00-11:00 and are only $15 BZE to attend. A steal of a deal for an hour of fitness, free equipment, and fun in the sun!
Dawson's Pit Fighters
Dawson’s Pit Fighters
  1. Mixed Martial Arts. For martial artists visiting Ambergris Caye, be sure to check out Dawson’s Pit Fighters. Run by local coach Martin Dawson, this MMA school champions both people and values and trains in self-defense techniques such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and Lima-Lama. Dawson’s Pit Fighters also seeks to empower the community; they recently partnered with Hope Haven, a nonprofit children’s home in Belize, where they offer the organization’s young girls free monthly self-defense tactics meant to empower and protect. You can check out Dawson’s website to see about current class times or contact him here to inquire about visiting a class.
  1. Cardio Dance Fitness. Looking to get your Zumba on while on vacation? Located next to Barrel Bar just north of San Pedro High School, this cardio dance class will get you moving and grooving as you raise your heartbeat through fast paced, fun-filled active dance moves, punching, and kicking. Classes are $15 BZE for a week and are offered on weekdays at 6:00 am and 6:00 and 7:00 pm. Get your groove on as you sweat your heart out.
Yoga
Private yoga classes by appointment
  1. Yoga.  The discipline of yoga can be both physical and spiritual and with the view of the aquamarine Caribbean waters, the salty breeze drifting through the air, the sound of the waves lapping nearby, and the adoption of physical postures meant to strengthen your body and purify your mind, this is one practice that will truly appeal to each of your senses. Las Terrazas Resort offers yoga mats for your own personal use, or with the purchase of our popular Wellness Package we can arrange for your own private lesson on our signature dock that overlooks the Caribbean Sea!
  1. Gym. If you are looking for a more traditional gym experience, the Train Station Fitness Club is the facility for you. Famous for their quality equipment, professional and well-trained staff, and delicious smoothies and shakes, this is Ambergris Caye’s most popular gym. The Train Station offers a wide variety of free weights, weight machines, cardio equipment, personal training, and group fitness classes and has a little bit of everything for everyone to stay active while on vacation. Check them out the next time you are visiting Belize.
ATM Cave
Hike breathtaking ATM Cave
  1. Hiking. While Ambergris Caye itself is fairly flat, the beach does offer a 25 mile stretch for oceanside walking or beach runs. If more traditional hiking trails are what you are looking for, consider an excursion to mainland Belize for a dose of historical, architectural, natural, and active adventure. A day trip to Actun Tunichil Mucknal (or ATM Cave for short) includes hiking through flat shaded nature trails through the jungle as well as through three different knee deep steams, followed by a trek through caves that are often chest deep in waters. This day trip from Las Terrazas Resort is moderate in difficulty and is the perfect blend of physical activity and exploration through ancient Mayan civilization.

Ambergris Caye is a perfect option for those who enjoy a fit and active beach vacation. Be sure to check out any or all of these fitness options when planning your next trip to Belize. Contact our Las Terrazas Resort reservations office to book your trip today!

My Family Vacation to Belize: A Travel Agent’s Perspective

Ambergris Caye is the perfect beach vacation destination for family members of all ages. From educational experiences rich in history and culture, adventures that take you far above treetop canopies and deep down beneath caves, to soaking up the wind and the waves by way of jet skis, kayaks, parasailing, and sunset cruises, one thing is certain: the island of Ambergris Caye is full of adventure and is made for creating memories that will last a lifetime.

We interviewed Kris Nelson, who recently traveled to Ambergris Caye for spring break. As a travel agent formerly with Strong Travel Services, Kris had been to Ambergris Caye once before with a group of travel agents. Although she did have the opportunity to explore famous jungles of Belize, she was technically still at work, and she did not get to experience everything on her wish list. However, her time here in Belize was enough for her to know that she would one day come back. Kris was drawn to the amazing light blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, fell in love with the authentic community that is evidenced on the island, and delighted in the fact that golf carts are the main mode of transportation around town. These things made her return to Ambergris Caye a simple choice, and she could not wait to return to Belize for her family’s spring break trip.

ATVs

Not only did Kris bring her own family to Las Terrazas Resort on Ambergris Caye, they invited friends to travel with them, because travel is alway more fun with friends! Between both families, there were two teenage boys – a great age in that they were old enough to drive the golf carts (valid driver’s licenses are required to drive), were able to experience nearly all that the island had to offer, and could have explored San Pedro on their own if they had wanted. And though the island was perfectly suitable for these near-adults, don’t be discouraged if you have younger children in your family; the resort alone has much to offer for children of all ages. Ask our Beach Captain for lessons in climbing a coconut tree, sailing the Hobie Cat, or scouring the sea grass for starfish. And be sure that your camera is nearby – the smiles you capture are definitely Christmas card worthy.

As far as Kris’ family and friends, they opted for an excursion to mainland Belize where they rode through the jungle on ATVs, hiked to a cave, and then went cave tubing through ancient, underground rivers… all of which were a huge hit for every member of their trip, headlamps and all!

Guests

The Truck Stop, Belize’ first ever shipping container food park and beer garden, was also a favorite shared experience. The Truck Stop’s proximity to Las Terrazas Resort, the variety of food, and the laid-back ambiance made this a fantastic spot for these two families to hang out. Visitors will love the live music and activities like watching an outdoor poolside movie, singing karaoke, or playing ping pong and corn-hole. You might even find yourself on stage for the Not-So-Newlywed Game or Family Feud.

The Truck Stop

Staying at Las Terrazas Resort was a no-brainer for Kris and her family. As the most luxurious spa resort on the island, and the only Virtuoso property, Las Terrazas Resort was an easy pick based on seclusion and elegance. The family enjoyed fry jacks for breakfast each morning and raved about the fine dining offered at O Restaurant, the resort’s onsite eatery.

Despite Las Terrazas Resort’s luxury and glam, Kris did mention that it would be helpful for families to know that Ambergris Caye is not a place to expect opulence at every turn. While there are certainly pockets of luxury, the island is overall known for being a relaxed and casual destination where the locals are very proud. They welcome you to try their food, crafts and customs… and you should! Kris suggests knowing where the island’s hidden gems are, like the Secret (not so secret anymore!) Beach and Elvi’s Kitchen.

Elvi's Kitchen

With all of the traveling that Kris has experienced in her career as a travel agent, it is an honor to know that she chose Ambergris Caye and Las Terrazas Resort as her family’s spring break destination. And while it might seem easy to just book a trip yourself in today’s digital age, using a travel agent is still such a valuable resource.

Best Of Belize 2: A 4-Day Itinerary Of Things To Do Near San Pedro Belize

Recently we provided a sample itinerary for those who are visiting Las Terrazas Resort for the first time, but we can’t stop there. Though we recognize that many travelers prefer to not visit destinations they have already seen and experienced, the reality is that Belize offers so many wonderful sights, attractions, and excursions that you simply cannot see it all in one trip. Therefore, Las Terrazas Resort has created a sample itinerary for those returning guests who might be wondering what they can do on your second (or third… or sixth!) time around. For those of you who have already experienced Ambergris Caye, you will likely be more comfortable venturing into some of Belize’s off-the-beaten path adventures that you might not have considered during your first trip. Below is an example of some of the many things you can see and do for your return trip to the wonderful world of Belize.

Ocean Front Sea House

Arrival Day: Having stayed at our Belize boutique hotel once before, consider upgrading to one of Las Terrazas Resort’s more luxurious accommodations. After you unwind from your travels with our signature Rum Punch, head to your Ocean View Sea House that leads directly to the white sand beach or Penthouse suite where you can privately indulge in your very own jacuzzi or plunge pool from the third floor balcony. If you just want to rest and unwind from your travels, consider staying on the lush resort grounds and dining at Las Terrazas Resort’s on-site O Restaurant where you will enjoy top notch poolside service. Or, for those of you who are ready to get out on the town, consider a restaurant with a view so you can take in your new surroundings with a bang. Enjoy a meal at Stella’s Sunset, a quaint and intimate lagoon side restaurant with an incredible view of the sunset (hence its name!). Here you can watch the sun fall below the horizon from the dock, dip your toes in the sand as you dine near the shore, or enjoy s’mores around their community fire pit. This restaurant is a hidden gem that is often frequented by those more acquainted with Ambergris Caye and promises to please.

Beach side massage

Day 1: Since you’ve likely already checked out Secret Beach, head out to Tranquility Bay for the day, located 12 miles north of San Pedro Town. Away from the hustle and bustle, this secluded paradise offers a tranquil beach experience unlike any other. In fact, it is the only beach on Ambergris Caye where you can safely swim directly from the shore to the reef. Consider snorkeling this day so you can be amazed by all the marine life as you swim your way to the second largest barrier reef in the world. Be sure to bring your underwater camera or GoPro to capture the incredible sea life below. Refuel from your undersea explorations with cold beverages and lunch specials served right there on the beach. As for how to get there, we recommend that you travel by boat. While it is possible to travel by golf cart, this beach is so remote that it makes travel less easy. For a small fee, you can be picked up from the Las Terrazas Resort dock and delivered directly to Tranquility Bay. This option is easy, cheap, and allows you to maximize your time at the beach without having to deal with the otherwise two hour round-trip golf cart trek.

After a day at Tranquility Bay, head back to the resort for an even more tranquil evening. Following a day in the sun, you can decompress from your snorkeling adventure with a massage on the beach from Las Terrazas Resort’s very own Serenity Spa and Wellness Center. Offering total relaxation and bliss, this massage promises to lull you to sleep as the lapping waves and ocean breeze envelope you in peace and calm. Don’t forget to end the day with Happy Hour at O Restaurant. Offered every day from 4-6pm, this laid back end to the day will allow you to continue unwinding as you indulge in our fabulous cocktail creations. These options are pure Belizean bliss and the perfect way to close the day.

Belize Zoo

Day 2: Consider a trip to the mainland. Now that you have seen and experienced Ambergris Caye, head to Belize proper for an exciting day of excursions. We suggest a combination two-part excursion starting with the Belize Zoo. With more than 200 animals from 45 different species, this zoo will impress all who come. Come see Belize’s national animal, the tapir, up close and personal alongside other beautiful wildlife such as five native wildcat species, various monkeys, exotic birds, reptiles, and more. The native wildlife will leave a lasting impression and is sure to connect you to the heart of Belize all the more.

After a few hours at the zoo, take advantage of your time on the mainland by experiencing another awesome adventure. Consider soaring high above a canopy of rainforest trees with a ziplining excursion where you can experience an aerial zip line tour as you traverse from one tree top platform to another via a steel cable that is secured 80 feet above ground. Or exchange heights for history and opt instead to explore the ancient Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. Located just a few miles from the western border of Belize, this ancient archaeological site boasts of the partially excavated and largest pyramid, El Castillo, which offers an amazing view of Belize’s Cayo District and Guatemala from 130 feet above ground.

Regardless of which adventure you choose, Las Terrazas Resort’s Front Desk staff will be more than happy to arrange this day trip of a lifetime. The friendly and knowledgeable Front Desk staff at Las Terrazas Resort will make all of the travel arrangements necessary to get to the mainland, so that whether you opt to go by air or by water, you will get there safe and sound and free of hassle.

ACES

Day 3: If your trip the Belize Zoo left you craving more of Belize’s incredible wildlife, be sure to visit the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary, otherwise known as ACES Croc Rescue. Located in the heart of San Pedro Town, their crocodile and expedition tour is one experience that is unique only to the island. Setting it apart even further is the fact that it is an evening tour, leaving your day wide open for rest and relaxation on the beach. With ACES, you’ll join their expert croc team as you cruise through the Isla Bonita mangrove habitat into the night and search for crocodiles, birds, and other nocturnal wildlife. With our commitment to wildlife preservation, this is one tour that truly reflects the heart of both Las Terrazas Resort and Belize.

Sea turtle

Day 4: As your trip comes to a close, we can’t help but recommend that you get back in the aquamarine waters of Belize one last time. With the beautiful Belize Barrier Reef system directly offshore of Ambergris Caye, one visit really just isn’t enough to take it all in. Consider heading back out to the water where in just one day you can experience everything from sailing to snorkeling to a delicious beach bar-b-que right on the Caribbean Sea. With this excursion, you will sail just six miles north to Mexico Rocks for your first snorkel stop.  Mexico Rocks is known for many conch, banded shrimp, arrow crab, grunts, yellow tail snappers, and an assortment of Butterfly and Angelfish.  The site is protected from ocean swells and currents, so it makes for easier snorkeling, perfect for beginners.  Depth is only about 6 to 12 feet, so you can see everything up close, and with the Caribbean Sea offering such crystal-clear waters, visibility in this area about 50 feet or more. While you snorkel, your tour guide will prepare a delightful BBQ lunch for you that will include Tandori BBQ chicken, roasted potatoes, Thai Pasta salad, green salad and coconut brownies. You’ll finish the afternoon with more snorkeling as you make the sail back to Las Terrazas Resort.

After this full day excursion, we expect you to have worked up an appetite. If your excursion falls on a Friday, you have to experience Sushi Night at O Restaurant, where O Restaurant’s very own Chef Nolvin prepares all the sushi by hand. Chef Nolvin’s signature sushi includes a wide variety of sushi favorites including but not limited to tuna, salmon, eel, unagi, and lobster rolls. Not a Friday? That’s okay! Consider instead a private beach dinner where Chef Nolvin will customize a menu especially for you. Not only is this a romantic option for couples but is also a perfect dining experience for any group of friends or family members who are traveling together. Private beach dinners on Las Terrazas Resort’s beautiful white sand beach are such a unique event that we host no more than two per evening and is a personal, unforgettable, and irreplaceable dining experience.

We told you that you couldn’t experience all of Belize in just one trip! Prior to your departure, our US-based Reservations Office will be happy to provide you with a list of over 50 exciting tours that can be mixed and matched to create your dream vacation. Once upon Ambergris Caye, the concierge at Las Terrazas Resort’s Front Desk can assist you in planning last-minute excursions, as well as clarify any departure details. With so many native experiences that are off the beaten path, we know that you will leave your repeat trip nothing short of satisfied… and wanting to come back again, and again, and again.

Best of Belize: A 4-Day Itinerary for Your Dream Vacation

Are you curious what a vacation to Las Terrazas Resort on beautiful Ambergris Caye might look like? For our guests who have never traveled to Belize and are struggling to fit everything you’ve researched online into a four-day vacation, never you fear! Below is a fantastic itinerary to give you an idea of what you can accomplish during your time with us at Las Terrazas Resort. Of course every traveler is different, and our Reservations Team looks forward to customizing an itinerary for an unBELIZEable adventure.

Beach volleyball

Arrival Day: Upon your arrival to Ambergris Caye’s San Pedro Airstrip, you will be met by our personal resort van driver, Walter, who will warmly greet you and safely transport you to the local marina. From there, Las Terrazas Resort’s private boat captains will meet you and take you on the short, informative, and absolutely breathtaking boat ride to our beachfront hotel via the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. As you step onto the renowned Las Terrazas Resort dock (a great place for photo ops!), you will be personally welcomed by our hospitable staff who will collect your luggage and offer you a Rum Punch and cold eucalyptus towel as they escort you to the open air Palapa Lobby for check in. Spend the rest of your evening getting settled and absorb the beauty of Belize. Take a shower, lounge by the pool, play games or start a game of volleyball on the beach, or confirm your excursion itinerary with the Front Desk as you unwind from your travels.

Snorkel

Day 1: Your adventure begins! Get into the water and do one of the things Belize is best known for – snorkel. Book a trip with our on-site, five-star PADI dive shop for a world-class underwater adventure: dive with turtles, explore the famous Great Blue Hole, and discover the sea life of the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second largest barrier reef system. Head back to the hotel for an afternoon nap or pool-side lounge before heading out to the ever so popular Truck Stop, Belize’s first ever beer garden, for dinner, drinks, and games. Just a short golf cart ride from the hotel, this happening island spot offers a variety of food and a laid-back atmosphere, including but not limited to great music and activities like watching an outdoor poolside movie, singing karaoke, heading on stage for a live version of Family Feud, or playing ping pong and cornhole.

Cave tubing

Day 2: Having spent your first day under the water, head to the mainland for an equally exotic excursion. Our cave tubing and zip lining packages allow you to discover the secrets of the Mayans as you explore underground river caves and zip through the jungle along a network of tree-top platforms. This experience is the perfect blend of education and exploration as you will see and learn about ancient Mayan culture by way of thrilling adventure. Because this excursion is on the mainland, it’s a fun and full day and will put you back at Las Terrazas Resort just in time for dinner. Consider ordering room service or a made-to-order pizza from O Restaurant as you unwind from day 2 of vacation in your luxury resort residence for the night.

Secret Beach

Day 3: After all the adventure of your first two days, take it easy with a day at Secret Beach. Hailed as one of the top 5 swimming spots in Ambergris Caye, this once hidden gem is growing in popularity. Though it is not much of a “secret” anymore, it’s not too crowded and is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Secret Beach is located north of Las Terrazas Resort and is known for its laid back and relaxing vibe with beach tunes from the local taco truck and the amazing view of the mangrove islands off in the distance. The warm, clear blue waters are the most amazing place to take a dip and paddleboat, kayak, or canoe. The palapas offer a serene place to wander off to enjoy the view quietly, but the beach itself is a tad more lively, attracting visitors to the quaint and quirky restaurants, food trucks, and bars that line the waters. Whether you want to snooze on the sand with a drink in hand, binge on bar food, try out a new water toy, or swim the day away, Secret Beach has something for everyone. After a day in the sun, consider heading back to the hotel for dinner at Las Terrazas Resort’s renowned O Restaurant. A TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Award Winner, our restaurant serves international, Caribbean, and Central American cuisine, presenting only the freshest, in-season, and locally sourced ingredients on the island.

San Pedro Town

Day 4: For your fourth and final day on Ambergris Caye, get out on the town. Rent one of our golf carts and explore San Pedro, only a 20-minute ride from Las Terrazas Resort. With the island only being three streets wide, it’s easy to navigate on your own. Start your morning off with a walk along the beach, a casual game of beach volleyball, or organizing a beach BBQ on our white sand beach. You’ll definitely want to do some souvenir shopping while you’re in town, so be sure to check out the San Pedrano Town Artisan Market, a cute new marketplace that recently popped up and offers local gifts and mementos that are handcrafted by local Belizeans. Don’t forget to enjoy a Belikin Beer, Belize’s local brew, or stop by the Belize Chocolate Company for some coffee and a tasty treat. While walking about, be sure to curb your hunger with Ambergris Caye’s tasty street food, and then cool off with a deliciously refreshing Belizean popsicle from local business owner Regina Sansores with Las Paletas. And lest you think we have forgotten to mention the best part (local restaurants, of course!), rest assured we have your night cut out for you with one of the best outings of all time—the Belize Food Tour. This amazing local company, with fantastic tour guides, will guide you to all of the best local fare as you discover the island’s culture and history through food. As you walk throughout San Pedro, you will hit up several of the island’s best eateries – from long standing popular restaurants like Elvi’s Kitchen to mom and pop hole-in-the-walls like Brianna’s Food Palace and other lesser known but well-kept gems on the island. This unique dining experience will let you taste all the local flavors in one fun-filled night.

As you can see, Ambergris Caye offers so much adventure. Does it sound too adventurous? Consider instead a more relaxing option like a scrumptious poolside brunch at O Restaurant (our famous fry jacks are a must try!), followed by an afternoon full of treatments at our onsite Serenity Spa, and ending the day with a romantic private beach dinner complete with a custom three course menu. No matter what you have in mind for your vacation, Ambergris Caye and Las Terrazas Resort can make it happen.

Book a reservation today and allow us to customize the trip of your dreams.

Places to Worship on Ambergris Caye

We know that many visitors to Belize like to continue worshipping even while on vacation to Las Terrazas Resort, both for their own spiritual nourishment as well as to experience the unique worship styles that present themselves in international contexts. Ambergris Caye is a cultural melting pot in terms of ethnicity and language, and their spirituality and faith practices are no exception. With different customs and cultures comes varying faith backgrounds, and the island’s religious diversity is well displayed by its vast array of local congregations. At Las Terrazas Resort, we understand that the guests who walk through our palapa are just as unique and diverse in their spirituality as those who inhabit the island, and we want to make sure our guests have everything they need to nourish their bodies, minds, and souls while away from home. We hope that this list of churches, mosques, and various other places of worship will prove to be helpful as you seek out opportunities to explore and practice your faith while on Ambergris Caye.

One thing to note: because Belize is primarily a Christian country, the information on Protestant and Catholic churches is more accessible and readily available. While various other faith practices do exist and flourish on the island, their information is more easily communicated via word of mouth on the island. As such, feel free to contact our Reservations Office for more information and details concerning your preferred house of worship.

Protestant

Living Word Church, located on Jade Street in San Pedro, is known for having a warm and kind congregation with a pastor who powerfully preaches the Word of God. They deeply care about their community and strive to make an impact on those God has placed them among. Services are offered on Sundays at 10:45am and 7:30pm with opportunities for men and women to fellowship together on Thursdays at 7:30pm and Wednesdays at 7:30pm respectively. Kids’ Sunday School and nursery classes are also available on Sundays. Our very own Head of Dining, Noreen Thomas attends this congregation so be sure to wave hello if you see her!

Sagebrush Church is another non-denominational Christian church on Ambergris Caye. With live worship, children’s programming, and on-site pastoral staff available to answer your questions and assist you in an authentic worship experience, Sagebrush is another great option for Protestant church goers. Located on Laguna Drive, Sagebrush offers worship services on Sundays at 9:00am and 10:30am as well as on Tuesdays at 7:00pm. Children’s programming for ages 6 weeks through 11 years old are offered at all three services.

Catholic

The majority of Belizeans are Catholic and as such there is a predominant Catholic church on the island. For more unique and picturesque island ambiance, check out San Pedro Roman Catholic Church. Located right on the beach, this beautiful faith community offers an exceptionally spiritual experience as the relaxing sound of the crashing waves nearby enhances your time of worship.  Daily Mass is offered in English on Monday thru Saturday at 7:00am. Sunday Mass is offered at 8:00am and 10:00am (English) and 7:00pm (Spanish).

Islam

Muslim worshippers can find Masjed Al-Akramin in San Pedro Town. Here you can gather alongside the island’s Muslim congregants for the five daily prayers or attend a Friday congregation sermon. Though information about this community is sparse online, our Front Desk team would be happy to contact the local Imam to let him know of your arrival and to best accommodate your spiritual needs while on the island.

Church of Latter-Day Saints

The Church of Latter-Day Saints has more recently opened their doors in the old Blue Rails Condos right on the beach. Located on the corner of Sea Grape and Coconut, this LDS Branch offers English services on Sundays at 10:00am.

Jehovah’s Witness

Located on Sea Grape Drive in San Pedro Town, this Jehovah’s Witness community offers services in Kriol, English, and Spanish, appealing to the various Belizeans who inhabit the island. Worship times are as follows:

Kriol – Tuesdays at 7:00pm and Saturdays at 5:00pm

English – Thursdays at 7:00pm and Sundays at 10:00am

Spanish – Wednesdays at 7:00pm and Sundays at 6:30pm

Meditation

For those who do not find it necessary to seek out a local congregation, but still prefer to set aside a time of quiet meditation and reflection, consider practicing yoga on Las Terrazas Resort’s beachfront property. Yoga mats are provided in each room and our ever-efficient staff would be happy to arrange a private lesson (single or group) for you on Las Terrazas Resort’s signature dock that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.

While experiencing the wonderous creation and landscape that surrounds Ambergris Caye is a spiritual encounter all on its own, we hope that this list will encourage and enhance your faith as you seek to continue worshipping while away from your regular congregation. For more information on any of the above fellowships, please contact our offices today.

5 Reasons To Choose A San Pedro Belize Hotel Over A Rental Property

In today’s modern world, we are privileged to have a variety of options when it comes to vacation lodging. From hotels and motels to resorts, bed and breakfasts and even the more recent inception of vacation home rentals, the opportunities are endless, and choosing a place to stay can be overwhelming. When planning a “bucket list” vacation such as Belize, we invite you to explore not only Las Terrazas Resort but also other independent Belize hotels for your unBELIZEable vacation. Below are just a few reasons why we believe that hotels are the best choice for once in a lifetime vacation destinations like Ambergris Caye.

1. Live in Luxury While Airbnb-type options are great when it comes to experiencing a home away from home, the wonderful thing about taking a tropical vacation is that you aren’t at home-you’re in paradise! While staying at a Belize luxury hotel like ours, you should expect nothing short of extravagance. Resorts are unique in that they provide both the casual comforts of home while doing so in style. An independent Belize hotel offers what a vacation home rental simply cannot – a luxe lifestyle for the entirety of your stay.

More specifically speaking, at Las Terrazas Resort, we do all the dirty work for you! While cooking is certainly an option (and groceries stocking services are available), O Restaurant satisfies all of your nutritional and foodie needs without you ever having to lift a finger to filet a fish or wash a plate.  Our on-site restaurant is run by head Chef Nolvin Catalan, who provides the perfect fusion of international, Caribbean, and Central American cuisine, from traditional comfort food to fine dining.

While staying at Las Terrazas Resort in Belize, you won’t have to spend your precious vacation time cleaning either. Vacation homes often require mandatory fees for housekeeping service, and yet many tend to tack on check out instructions that are required of guests before they can leave. Not so at our boutique resort! Our staff provides daily housekeeping services where your entire residence will be cleaned and your amenities restocked. We also offer an evening turn-down service, allowing you to enter a room that has been prepared with your ultimate comfort and relaxation in mind (ask us how you can treat your travel partner to locally crafted truffles at bedtime!).

Why cook and clean if you don’t have to? At Las Terrazas Resort, you’re on vacation and we allow you to fully live like it.2. Contribute to the Community Local island resorts are a great way to contribute to the community. Many travelers look for opportunities to give back to the communities that they are visiting and booking your stay at a local hotel does just that. While vacation homes primarily benefit the homeowner alone, staying at a local hotel or resort helps contribute to society overall. Hotels have many employees and staying at one will help contribute to the local economy and job market, which will help Ambergris Caye and beyond to flourish. Not only that but when you stay at Las Terrazas Resort, our small staff will become a part of your vacation experience. We love posing with you in your vacation photos and sharing what life is like on Ambergris Caye. At Las Terrazas Resort, you aren’t just contributing to the community – you are connecting with real hearts and lives.

3. Personal assistance at your service Unlike many motels and vacation homes, island resorts offer the Belizean warmth and hospitality of a staff that is designed to meet your every need. Rather than spending your time on Google figuring out what to do or staring at maps to get from point A to point B, our Front Desk and Concierge teams are ready and willing to help with all local arrangements and suggestions. From reservations at island restaurants, to planning all of your excursions and transportation needs on the island of Ambergris Caye to the mainlaind, our friendly and professional staff family is available for any questions or special requests during your stay at Las Terrazas Resort. Let us help you plan the best vacation possible!

4. Large group accommodations People often opt for vacation home rentals because they believe that they will best accommodate their large groups and families. And while that is certainly a perk to Airbnb and other rental companies, don’t assume that resorts are just for couples or small groups. The unique thing about Las Terrazas Resort is that we don’t just offer rooms, we offer residences. Families and large groups can book one to two story residences with two to three bedrooms and floor plans ranging from 1,000-3,000 square feet. Put the notion of a hotel room aside and embrace the reality of what we actually offer – glamorous Caribbean beach front homes, garden view luxury villas, and Penthouses with private plunge pools or Jacuzzis on their private balconies to name a few.

5. Affordable prices Many people often assume that Airbnb, VRBO, and other vacation home properties are more affordable than resorts. However, the prices are more comparable than many think. While home rentals may initially appear to be cheaper, the fine print is where it all adds up. By the time taxes and cleaning fees are added to the bill, the final price is often the same as a resort bill—without a hotel’s amenities.

Not only that, but resorts offer deals and specials to make their property even more affordable. Be sure to check out Las Terrazas Resort’s Specials and Packages page to learn about how you can escape and save at one of the best places to stay in Belize.

As you consider your vacation to Ambergris Caye, we encourage you to consider our luxury spa resort to meet your lodging needs. We truly believe that our Belize property, and others like it, will allow you to live your best life on your dream Belizean vacation. Click here to book your stay today!
