To the reserve
Fly 20 minutes to Belize City, then drive approximately 2 hours west to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve near San Ignacio.
Jungle hike and cave entrance
Hike 45 minutes through the jungle with three river crossings. At the cave entrance, swim through a pool of crystal-clear water into the mouth of the cave. You are wet from this point on.
Inside the cave
Approximately three hours inside. Wade through underground rivers, climb over boulders, and squeeze through narrow passages lit only by your headlamp. Deep inside, the ground rises into the dry ceremonial chamber. Remove your shoes, put on socks. Pottery, stone tools, and skeletal remains surround you, untouched for over 1,000 years. The Crystal Maiden, a fully calcified skeleton that sparkles under lamplight, lies in the final chamber.
Return
Retrace your steps out of the cave, swim back through the entrance, hike back through the jungle. Lunch, then drive to Belize City and fly back to San Pedro. Back by approximately 6:00 PM.
